The Most Popular Move Is Often Not the Best One
Opening statistics show what people play, not what is correct. The difference between the two is the most useful thing in the database.
Two different questions
An opening database answers one question: what did people play from here. An engine answers a different one: what is best from here.
Most players treat those as the same answer. They are not, and the distance between them is the most practically useful thing in the whole database.
A worked example
The Vienna Gambit, after 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4. Black has four sensible replies.
Look at what those numbers say. The move Black plays most, by a wide margin, is the one that scores worst for Black. The move that holds the balance is played least of the four.
That is not a quirk of this position. It is the normal condition of chess below master level, and it exists because popularity is driven by what looks natural, and what looks natural and what is correct are only loosely related.
Why the popular move is often wrong
Three reasons, and all of them are stable.
Natural is not correct. Taking a free pawn looks obvious. Developing towards the centre looks obvious. Chess punishes several obvious moves severely, and it does so most often in exactly the sharp positions where openings are decided.
Popularity is inherited. People play what they were shown. A move that appeared in a popular video three years ago will still be showing up in the database today, whatever the engine thinks of it.
The refutation is harder than the mistake. A move can lose objectively and still score well, because punishing it requires finding something difficult under time pressure. This is the entire business model of the opening trap.
What to do with this
Prepare for the move you will face, not the move you should face.
If your opponent’s most likely reply is a mistake, the valuable preparation is the punishment, worked out at home, ready to play. That is a concrete edge available in almost every game you play, and almost nobody claims it because almost nobody looks at the frequency column.
The inversion is worth stating plainly: the more common the mistake, the more your preparation is worth. A refutation of a move nobody plays is a curiosity. A refutation of a move played in six games out of ten is close to a free half point.
Do not confuse this with playing badly yourself
There is a trap in the trap. Noticing that popular moves are often unsound is not a licence to play unsound moves and hope.
The asymmetry only works in one direction. You are preparing at home with an engine and a database. Your opponent is deciding at the board with a clock. That is the whole edge, and it disappears the moment you rely on them not having done the same work.
Reading the column properly
Two habits make the frequency column safe to use.
Check the sample size. A move played four times with a great score is noise. The game count sits next to the percentage for a reason.
Check the rating band. What is popular at 1200 and what is popular at 2200 are frequently different moves entirely, and preparing against the wrong band is how people end up studying lines they will never see.
